La Habra Homes: Community Living
La Habra began as the Rancho Cañada de La Habra of Don Mariano Reyes Roldan, back in 1839. This rich land was cattle country until severe flooding and subsequent drought ended the heyday of the cattle barons in this area. Oil and citrus industries then flourished, but it wasn't until World War II that La Habra really started booming. Today, La Habra is a "bedroom community" located in northwest Orange County. The rolling hills that cattle once grazed on are now dotted with homes that provide comfortable lifestyles for people who work in Los Angeles, but don't want to live in the city proper.
World War II marked a big change in La Habra real estate once war veterans started settling in the area and the post-war years boom was on. From the 1950s on, a significant number homes of varying styles have been built, resulting in a comfortable mix of styles and ages in La Habra's single-family homes. Prices, sizes, and locations vary, making La Habra real estate affordable for many different lifestyles. One can even find pre-war year homes here, making the classic California bungalow of the 1920s and '30s not an impossibility for the La Habra resident.
La Habra has a lot to offer residents in terms of culture. The Children's Museum at La Habra has been operating for over 30 years and housed partly in a Union Pacific train depot, built in 1923. The La Habra Depot Theatre has over 25 live stage productions to its credit and is still going strong. In August of every year, the famous Corn Festival is held and attracts thousands of people to La Habra to view the parade and participate in the cookout, games, carnival rides, listen to live music and generally have a good time.
Parents will be happy to know that La Habra is home to a lot of great schools of all levels, with both public and private options. La Habra is also situated close to several post-secondary institutions that won't require expensive airfare to commute during vacations and holidays. The low crime rate is another attraction; La Habra is well below the U.S. average for all types of criminal activity.
Families will also enjoy the many parks in the area that feature greenspace, playgrounds, fitness facilities and picnicking structures such as picnic tables and BBQ grills. The La Bonita Sports Complex supports a variety of sports with its multi-use facilities, including a Skate park, rink, court, illuminated softball fields and playground.
La Habra is also famed for the Hass avocado, which had its start here from a single tree. The Hass Avocado Mother Tree succumbed to root rot in 2002, but a commemoration plaque marks the spot where the Hass avocado was first born. Hass avocado trees can still be found growing near La Habra homes and properties, as well as the neighboring La Habra Heights.
